Does the type of website I have matter for ranking?

Websites and ranking on Google.

Short Answer, not really.

The type of website you have does not affect ranking directly, as long as search engines can crawl your webpages and understand the content, then you’re good to go.

Many practitioners say that you need an ultra-fast and sleek website, as this helps with ranking. This simply isn’t true; no amount of load balancing, JavaScript reducing, or a specific CMS will magically move you from page 3 to the top of page 1.

The fundamentals of SEO persist, and you still need to have a measure of content, relevancy, and authority to rank on the SERP's.

Search engines do not view webpages the same way we do; they can understand multiple different files, formats, and images. Therefore, it is not necessary to meticulously design a websites in a certain way to fit in with a certain structure.

As long as the webpage is visible to the search engines, there’s good internal linking, and relevancy is created, it does not matter how the site is hosted or designed.

Core web vitals and speed tests don't matter as much as people think. Even though eBay "fails" this, I wonder if its 91 million backlinks and relevancy have more of an effect on being shown in the SERPS?

Conversion Optimisation

So the type of website you use does not directly affect ranking, so what's the point in changing provider? This mostly comes down to ease of use, design, and the overall use case.

As you expand or want to have a website update, you may find that your current provider, be it Wix, Squarespace, or IONOS, isn’t giving you the customisability you desire.

Moving to another CMS can allow you to have more flexibility, create pages more quickly, and connect analytics products for clearer data and optimise the websites for more conversions.

CRO conversion rate optimisation aids in designing pages in such a way that that maximises and gets the most signups, sales, or clients as a result.

By looking at analytical data, this can be used to improve on-site elements to satisfy user needs.  Simple changes to webpages, such as layouts, call to actions, buy now pay later services, can all be used to increase conversion rate, lowering friction, leading to more sales.

The use of specific language, testimonial integration, and online booking forms can aid in capturing new consumers.  Basic CRM systems may be limited in providing the functionality for these, and changing to a new website or provider can help in adding these features.

So overall, the type of website does not matter design-wise as long as there’s relevance and content that is well-formed and interlinked. Although having a sleek design that is easy to navigate, with clear call to actions, and the ability to connect analytics and other third-party applications is important for your needs and overall scaling.
