How authority, relevancy and content works in SEO

When the question arises on the issue of SEO and why some sites outrank others, we cannot stray too far from the basic elements that make up SEO: relevancy, authority, and content. It is by following these elements that SEO success is found.

In this post, we will look at all three of these important elements and debunk many other elements that practitioners try and sell, which are supposedly important but have to zero effect on your actual rankings.

What The Hell is Relevency, Authority, & Content?

We understand this already can be confusing and it makes sense for you to be puzzled at first, but rest assured that we will make this easy for you to understand so that you can unravel the mystery of why other sites are ranking above yours and how to beat them at their game.

Relevency

Relevancy is simply just how relevancy you are for a search term. This is basically getting what the users are looking for with your site. For instance, when your page contains information about the word “apple”, you have relevancy for “apples”.

To get featured in Google’s results for a search term, you must be relevant for that term. You create relevancy through the use of the SLUG, which is basically the keyword at the end of the URL as shown below.
You can see in this example they have relevency for SEO and search aurhority.

Authority

Authority via backlinks is used by Google as way of casting votes of confidence, and comes only from backlinks. Search engines use links much like we might look at citations in academic papers, the more papers relevant to a source document that cite it the better!

Authority from backlinks are fundamental for signalling to Google your website is worth visiting and as a result increases your overall authority. These are not created equally, and the pages which they are linking to, the anchor text, and weather the linking page is inxeded by Google all play a role in passing this authority via links.
How backlinks

Content on a page

As it says on the tin really, you website just has to have content of some description. See how we didn't say "good content" or lots of content? - This is because Google has no way of knowing if content is good or bad as the search engine is content agnostic. You just have to have keywords on a page.

Many SEO's will try and sell monthly blog posts, minimum content sizes, and scheme markup as ranking factors. None of this will help you rank without authority from backlinks and relevency created around a subject. Oh a not to mention that Google does not index everypage on a website.

  • Have more authority and or relevency than you competition.
  • Have relevency relating to your produce or service from the pages your make.
  • Have no Google penalties.
  • Have good interal linking from one page to another.

So now you have an overview of the 3 pillars of ranking and how Google assesses one website over another. The best thing you can do now is see where you are currently ranking on Google for your selected keywords and see how you can build your authority through back links to your website.

A quick an easy way to snag a few legitimate backlinks is to use :inurl sponsored (name of your town or city here) on Google. This will bring a list of results in your local area which allow sponsorships and you can get a snag a few backlinks which will help increase your overall authority.
